Overview

What You'll See in This Demo

This demo shows how VR pallet stacking training turns one of the most basic warehouse jobs into a skill learners get right from day one. Built for the supply chain division of a Fortune 10 retail and e-commerce company, the program teaches three stacking patterns: brick stacking for cardboard cases that don’t interlock, column stacking for reusable plastic containers (RPCs) and interlocking cases, and cross-contamination layering for products like meat that need to go in the right place on the pallet. Each pattern follows the same learning sequence. Learners hear the instructions in a voiceover, see an illustration of the correct pattern, then practice it hands-on, grabbing cases with both hands and placing them corner by corner. Stacking mistakes can crush the goods on the bottom and turn them into unsellable waste, so learners build the right habits in VR, without slowing down the floor or putting real product at risk.

Whether you’re a warehouse operations leader, a distribution center trainer, or an L&D team onboarding high volumes of new hires, this approach shows how VR can make foundational warehouse skills consistent, repeatable, and ready before the first shift.

Key Learning Objectives

Teach three core pallet stacking patterns: brick stacking, column stacking for RPCs, and cross-contamination layering
Reinforce each pattern through a hear-see-do sequence of voiceover, illustration, and hands-on practice
Build correct case-handling habits, like grabbing with both hands and starting at the right corner of the pallet
Reduce damaged and unsellable goods by teaching what belongs on the bottom of a pallet and why
Help learners layer products like meat correctly to prevent cross-contamination
Train new hires without slowing daily operations or putting real product at risk
FAQ

Common Questions

Can VR be used for pallet stacking training?+
Yes. Pallet stacking is a physical, repetitive skill, which makes it a good fit for VR. Learners pick up virtual cases, place them on a pallet, and build the right patterns through hands-on practice, getting feedback along the way. Because it all happens in a virtual warehouse, they can practice as many times as they need without tying up floor space or damaging real product.
What are the main types of pallet stacking patterns?+
This program teaches three. Brick stacking is used for cardboard cases that don't interlock: each layer is offset so the edges overlap, like bricks in a wall, which adds stability. Column stacking is used for reusable plastic containers (RPCs) and cardboard cases with interlocking slots, which are stacked straight up so the slots line up. Cross-contamination layering determines where products go on the pallet, such as placing meat on the bottom, so one product can't contaminate another.
Why does proper pallet stacking technique matter?+
When a pallet is stacked incorrectly, the weight isn't supported the way it should be, and the goods on the bottom can get crushed or damaged. Damaged product often becomes unsellable waste. In food distribution, the wrong layering can also create cross-contamination risks. Getting the basics right protects product, reduces waste, and keeps orders moving.
How does a hear-see-do approach make VR training more effective?+
Each stacking pattern in this program is taught three ways: learners hear the instructions in a voiceover, see an illustration of the correct pattern, and then practice it themselves. Layering instruction this way supports different learning preferences and moves learners from understanding a task to doing it. That's the kind of learning design our instructional designers build into every VR program.
Can VR pallet stacking training be customized to our products and containers?+
Yes. The cases, containers, product types, and stacking rules in a VR program can reflect exactly what your teams handle, whether that's cardboard cases, RPCs, food products with layering requirements, or something else. The more closely the training matches your floor, the faster learners can apply it on the job.
How do we explore building a VR warehouse training program for our organization?+
Every program Roundtable Learning builds is custom-designed around your products, your processes, and the skills your new hires need most. Watch the demo to see what's possible, then connect with our team to talk through what a solution could look like for your warehouse.

00:00 | Welcome to the Pallet Stacking Module

“Hello. In this module, we will practice properly stacking cases onto a pallet.”

00:06 | Project Overview: Pallet Stacking for a Fortune 10 Retailer

Today we’re going to see the benefits of a VR training program we created to establish proper pallet stacking techniques for the supply chain division of a Fortune 10 retail e-commerce company.

00:16 | What Pallet Stacking Looks Like in the Warehouse

Pallet stacking is one of the basic jobs in the warehouse, where employees are sent to a specific zone to pick up an item, product, or certain type of material and place it in a specific way on a pallet.

00:28 | Three Stacking Patterns: Brick, Column, and Cross-Contamination Layering

The learner today is going to hear, see, and practice three different stacking patterns, starting with the brick pattern, then column stacking with RPCs, or reusable plastic containers, and finally cross-contamination layering.

00:41 | Step One: Hear It

The three main aspects the learner is going to go through: first, they’re going to get verbal instructions in a voiceover. “Select the meat that should go on the bottom. Good work.”

00:56 | Step Two: See It

Second, the learner is going to see an illustration of the task at hand. “Cardboard cases that don’t interlock need to be stacked like bricks, with the edges overlapping like this. RPCs and some cardboard cases are treated differently. They have slots that interlock with each other, so they should be stacked in columns like this.”

01:17 | Step Three: Do It

Third, the learner is going to walk through the task at hand by practicing in a safe environment. “Nice. Now let’s stack some cardboard cases. Start by grabbing a case with both hands. Good. Now place it in the corner on the far side of the pallet, closest to the pallet truck. Great job. Now do the same with the other four cases.”

01:48 | Why Proper Pallet Stacking Matters

Proper pallet stacking is important because if it’s done incorrectly, you run the risk of damaging goods placed on the bottom, which can become unsellable or unwanted waste.

01:57 | Training Without Slowing Down Operations

Warehouses thrive on speed and efficiency. By having your employees train in a safe environment, you’re able to continue daily operations without any hiccup or interference. There’s also no real threat of damaging actual products.

02:08 | Building Muscle Memory Before Day One

The learner is now benefiting by creating muscle memory of their daily tasks. So when they step on the floor on day one, they are 100% more confident and prepared, like an experienced worker.
