Overview

What You'll See in This Demo

This demo shows how VR ULD handling training teaches learners to move one of the heaviest, riskiest objects in air cargo: the unit load device. Built for the logistics division of a Fortune 10 global e-commerce company, the program places learners in a 1:1 replica of an aircraft cargo hold, where they practice safely loading and unloading ULDs. Before any hands-on practice, the program shows what can go wrong. Move a ULD too fast, build up too much momentum, and step off the grip tape into the red zone, and a foot can get caught in a hook while a massive load keeps coming. To make safe footwork measurable, learners wear PICO Motion Trackers on each ankle. The program knows exactly where they step and gives immediate feedback the moment they leave the safe area. For air cargo, ground handling, and logistics teams, it’s a way to build safe movement habits before anyone steps into a real aircraft.

Whether you’re a safety and compliance leader, an air cargo or ground operations manager, or an L&D team supporting logistics, this approach shows how VR and motion tracking can turn safety rules into habits learners feel in their own bodies.

Key Learning Objectives

Teach learners to safely load and unload ULDs inside an aircraft cargo hold
Show the consequences of moving a heavy ULD too fast before hands-on practice begins
Reinforce safe foot placement by tracking every step with PICO ankle-worn motion trackers
Deliver immediate feedback the moment a learner steps outside the safe area
Build familiarity with a 1:1 cargo hold replica before learners work on a live aircraft
Reduce the risk of caught-foot injuries without exposing learners to real hazards
FAQ

Common Questions

an VR be used for ULD handling and air cargo loading training?+
Yes. ULD handling is hard to practice safely in the real world, because the risks come from heavy loads, momentum, and tight spaces all at once. VR recreates the cargo hold at 1:1 scale, so learners can practice loading and unloading ULDs, see what happens when something goes wrong, and build safe habits before they ever work on a live aircraft.
How does VR training teach safe foot placement?+
In this program, learners wear a PICO Motion Tracker on each ankle, which lets the application track exactly where they're stepping. If a learner leaves the safe area marked by the grip tape, they get immediate feedback. Instead of learning about foot placement from a slide, they learn it through their own movement, and the correction happens in the moment.
What are PICO Motion Trackers, and why use them in VR training?+
PICO Motion Trackers are small wearable sensors that add position tracking beyond the headset and controllers. For this client, they were the only practical way to track foot position, which was the core safety behavior the training needed to teach. They open up training scenarios where lower-body movement, stance, or footwork matters.
Why is VR more effective than video for showing safety risks?+
On a flat screen, a hazard is something you watch. In VR, learners see it in 3D, at full scale, from their own point of view: a heavy ULD gaining momentum toward them while their foot is stuck. That sense of presence makes the risk more memorable, which is exactly what you want before learners start practicing the task.
Can VR ULD handling training be customized to our aircraft and equipment?+
Yes. This program was built as a replica of the client's actual cargo hold, down to the safe-zone markings. Our instructional designers and XR developers work from your aircraft types, ULD configurations, and SOPs to design scenarios around the mistakes that matter most in your operation.
How do we explore building a VR air cargo or ULD handling training program for our organization?+
Every program Roundtable Learning builds is custom-designed around your equipment, your environment, and the safety behaviors your team needs to master. Watch the demo to see what's possible, then connect with our team to talk through what a solution could look like for your operation.

00:00 | Stepping Into the Red Zone

“Try stepping away from the grip tape into the red area to see what happens.”

00:05 | Project Overview: Air Cargo Training for a Fortune 10 Company

The client we’re talking about today was the logistics division of a Fortune 10 global e-commerce company. We built a custom virtual reality application to teach learners how to safely load and unload ULDs into the aircraft.

00:20 | What Is a ULD?

A ULD is a unit load device. These are large containers that are loaded up with boxes and whatever you want to transport on the aircraft.

00:29 | Showing the Risks Before Practice Begins

Before the learner even starts practicing loading the ULD onto the aircraft, we want to show them the risks that could happen if an employee is moving a ULD too fast. They build up too much momentum with this heavy object, then step outside of the safe area and get their foot caught in a hook. Now you’ve entered a very dangerous situation, where this very large, very heavy object is moving toward you too quickly and your foot is stuck. That can be a huge risk for injury.

01:01 | Why VR Makes a Bigger Impact Than a Flat Screen

This can be a lot more impactful in VR than on a flat screen, because learners get to see these scenes in 3D.

01:06 | A 1:1 Replica of an Aircraft Cargo Hold

When the learner loads up the application, they see an exact replica of the cargo hold of an aircraft at 1:1 scale. This creates the most realistic environment possible so the learning is accurate and immersive.

01:22 | Tracking Foot Placement with PICO Motion Trackers

One unique thing we added to this application was the use of PICO Motion Trackers. The learner attaches one PICO Motion Tracker to each ankle, which allows us to precisely track where they’re stepping in the VR application. We can detect if the learner steps outside of a safe area and give them immediate feedback, rather than risking injury in real life. We’re simply letting them know if they’re doing something unsafe by tracking their feet.

01:54 | New Possibilities with Extra Position Data

The PICO Motion Trackers open up all sorts of possibilities, because they give us more position data we can use in the application in addition to the headset and controllers.

02:05 | Putting New Technology to Work

It’s always interesting in my job that we get to work with brand-new technology. The PICO Motion Trackers are the best option on the market right now for adding extra tracking to VR. We couldn’t have done it without the motion trackers. We’re getting to track foot positions that there’s no other way of tracking. It’s always very exciting to use new technology in useful and interesting ways.
